Smara offers two kinds of stay. In town, a small choice of hotels and guesthouses suits business trips and short stops. On the hamada around the town, desert camps such as Blackstone suit travellers who come for the landscape, the rock art and the night sky. This guide, written by a licensed local guide, explains the difference.
Staying in town
Hotels and guesthouses in Smara are simple and central, within reach of the zawiya of Sheikh Ma al-Aynayn, the market, cafés and services. They are the practical choice for one night, for business, or to catch an early flight or bus.
For an up-to-date list, see the Smara accommodation directory on Visit Smara.
Staying in the desert
A camp on the hamada gives you silence, a clear horizon, sunrise from your tent and a dark sky at night. Guided days start at the door. You need a transfer from town, so a desert stay is best for two nights or more.
Which one fits your trip
